The Politics of YouTube

For a long time, conservatives online have been watching the decisions made by YouTube regarding what to censor and what not. The people at Creeping Sharia and other anti-Islamist blogs have for years now discussed their difficulties in getting YouTube to remove straightforward calls for violence against Jews and others seen standing in the way of imposing sharia law, espousing terrorism and demonstrating how to wage jihad, for example. Obviously, such videos violate YouTube’s terms of service.

On the other hand, we have this video from FreeMarketAmerica critiquing what they regard as Obama’s anti-American policies, regulations, and enforcement or non-enforcement of the law:

The powerful piece, which has ‘gone viral,’ is based on a 1965 radio piece by Paul Harvey.

FreeMarketAmerica released the video in response to Earth Day, which “fizzled badly” this year, in part because of the continued revelations regarding the hysteria rhetoric of Gaia catastrophists, and in part, I’m guessing, because people have other things to worry about, such as how to scrape together the money to pay for their mortgages, pay off their student loans, buy gas for their climate-destroying automobiles and oh my God will you freaking people please shut up?

Because it went viral, I saw no need of posting it here . . . until Michelle Malkin and others were notified by the creators that YouTube has suspended their account:

As Michelle points out, the group’s Twitter account has been suspended and the reason is still unknown. They’ve tried to get answers about the cause of the suspension with no result. Adam Bitely notes at NetRightDaily :

… for some strange reason, Twitter silenced the official account for the new Americans for Limited Government project Free Market America. The account, @FreeMarket_US, went live a few days before Earth Day and was slowly picking up steam.

On Earth Day, the official website for Free Market America was launched and [its] Facebook and Twitter components started to come to life as well. The first video put out by Free Market America, “If I wanted America to fail”, got over 120,000 hits in less than 36 hours!

But you would never know that if you tried to follow the Twitter page: it was suspended by Twitter midway through the day on Earth Day!

After numerous attempts to contact Twitter and see what the story was behind the suspension, we still have received no reason why the account was suspended.

Whether this was a matter that YouTube took up on its own volition, or whether it succumbed to lefty pressure is impossible to know without more information. Until I’m presented with evidence that this was an internal decision generated without any outside pressure, I’m inclined to give YouTube the benefit of the doubt. Especially with CISPA pending, online information-sharing platforms have reason to be wary, and it’s clear from the administration’s behavior generally that they will do anything that they believes benefits them politically, no matter how scummy or prejudicial to the marketplace of ideas, because they believe they’ll get away with it. A completely politicized FCC is no surprise, coming from an administration that employs such statist, fascist-aspiring creatures as Cass Sunstein, and considering the behavior of the Department of Justice (now hiring out some of its information services to Media Matters), the Department of Homeland Security (taking their priorities from the Southern Poverty Law Center), and all the rest.

At the same time, any such operation that doesn’t speak out against administration bullying (whether through its official or unofficial organs) is complicit with it. The Obama administration has no qualms about using outside organizations to target their opponents for them, so that they can maintain plausible deniability:

Barry Lynn, the anti-Christian reverend and director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, filed a complaint today with the IRS against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peoria, Illinois. Lynn claims the diocese broke federal rules when the bishop spoke out against Barack Obama’s unconstitutional mandate that forces Catholic institutions to pay for birth control for employees when it goes against church doctrine.

Whether one believes that the Obamaists are trying to take us in the direction of Hitler or Stalin really has no bearing on the issues here. A priest who believes that that is what is happening has a moral obligation to say so. For many years, the left has tried to position the Catholic Church as co-conspirators, collaborators with, or at the very least amoral, quailing, by-default abettors of Hitler and Mussolini. When Holocaust history is taught in American schools, in the very perfunctory way it and almost everything else but Gaiaist hysteria and concern for endangered animals and people’s skin color are taught, they are never informed that many Christian religious were among the victims of the fascist and communist prison camps . . . or simply executed outright. When clergy do exercise their moral obligation to speak out against ideological thugs, though . . . that’s when leftists get really pissed.

Occam’s razor has a new political proposition in America: if you can imagine a form of leftist thuggery, it’s likely that it’s being employed. Wal-Mart, the bête noire of hipster douchebags everywhere, has been much in the news of late for alleged bribery in Mexico. The administration itself bribes Mexico in quite a number of ways to not kick about the murder of its citizens aided by Fast and Furious. Among these, obviously, is its intention not to do anything at all about illegal immigration, though whether this continues to be a value proposition for Mexico’s ever-corrupt government is becoming questionable.

People from Mexico aren’t as interested in coming to the United States as they used to be:

Douglas S. Massey, co-director of the Mexican Migration Project at Princeton, an extensive, long-term survey in Mexican emigration hubs, said his research showed that interest in heading to the United States for the first time had fallen to its lowest level since at least the 1950s. “No one wants to hear it, but the flow has already stopped,” Mr. Massey said, referring to illegal traffic. “For the first time in 60 years, the net traffic has gone to zero and is probably a little bit negative.”

This, in turn, is one of the reasons that the administration must fight as hard as it has against states’ photo ID laws; stupid macroeconomic trends such as this one make the prospect of stealing the next general election harder, and there is nothing this administration will not do to try stealing it. It is important that the MSM remain on-task promoting the Wal-Mart scandal story, because (call it an educated guess) Obama isn’t raking in enough in big contributions and he can make this issue go away for them if they pony up the cash, which they, among a shrinking list of US companies, actually have.

In Liberaland, PAC and Super PACs are unmitigated evil, whereas shakedowns and blackmail are just the way business is done. The Washington Post requires those dollars from Kaplan, backed by taxpayer loans (many of which will never be repaid), and the administration has fired off a warning shot or two about going after for-profit higher education corporations, but perhaps they can cut a deal . . . at least until after the election. The New York Times and other papers that don’t have their own cash cows to parasitize require actual subsidies, and the administration has made noises that it’s down with that idea . . . after the election. And there was a bit of unpleasantness regarding Medicare Advantage, but they’re planning to make that go away until . . . after the election, which is when Obama’s tax hikes and some of the more onerous aspects of his Health Care Reform kick in, too. Plus, more flexibility, Vladimir! These people are such animals that all they have to do is summon such issues onto the radar in order to get the desired effects; and our very brave, truth-to-power-speaking Fourth Estaters will temporize by feeding that crocodile; vacations on the Vineyard are at stake.

So, in short, if you try to think like a complete power-hungry scum-bag, chances are that any scummy schemes you cook up are actually underway with this administration. Or as Stacy likes to ask, rhetorically, is it possible to be too cynical? With these people, I agree, it’s not.

Many thanks to LaDona Harvey for the link. Check out her show.
